Trump Accounts for kids

Trump Accounts for kids

A Trump Account is a traditional IRA for a child under IRC §530A. The child owns it. An adult is the responsible party until age 18. Accounts are live now; funding started July 4, 2026. This page shows two paths: verify an election you already filed, or open a new Trump Account for kids, claim the $1,000 seed if eligible, and fund inside the $5,000 yearly cap. Free lesson. Education only — not tax, investment, or legal advice. Confirm every step on IRS.gov and TrumpAccounts.gov.

Start with the path that matches where you are. Path A is for parents who already filed IRS Form 4547. Path B is for opening a new account.

Path A

Verify an existing election

You already filed Form 4547. Do not file twice. Check status, wait for the Treasury email, then activate in the official app.

Jump to Path A →

Path B

Open a new Trump Account

Confirm the child’s SSN, file Form 4547, elect the $1,000 seed if eligible, activate, then contribute inside the $5,000 cap.

What you need on the table

Gather these before you start Path A or Path B. Match names and numbers to the child’s Social Security card exactly.

ItemWhy you need it

Path B — Open a new Trump Account (7 steps)

Use this path if you have not filed Form 4547 yet. Accounts are live. Funding started July 4, 2026. File with your return or on its own — do not attach Form 4547 to Form 1040-X.

  1. 1
Confirm the child’s SSN is issued. Match the name on the Social Security card exactly. No SSN means you cannot complete the election yet.
  2. 2
Set up ID.me and an IRS Online Account. Photo ID plus a live selfie. Budget 20–40 minutes the first time. Start at irs.help.id.me (official site).
  3. 3
File Form 4547, Trump Account Election(s). Fastest paths: trumpaccounts.gov (official site) or the live online form at IRS Form 4547 online (official site). Paper still works — see About Form 4547 and Instructions for Form 4547 (official site).
  4. 4
Elect the $1,000 seed if eligible (Part III). U.S. citizen children born January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028. Opening the account and claiming the seed are two different checks. The seed is not automatic and does not count against the $5,000 cap.
  5. 5
Wait for the Treasury activation email. Watch for mail from no-reply@trumpaccounts.treasury.gov. Do not refile while you wait.
  6. 6
Activate in the official app or web app only. Use trumpaccount.com (official site), support at trumpaccount.com/us/en/support (official site), or the Android app on Google Play (official site). Activation is required before the seed or any contribution can post.
  7. 7
Contribute — then ask HR about employer money. Family, friends, and the child can send after-tax dollars inside the $5,000 combined yearly cap (2026–27; indexed after 2027). Ask HR whether your workplace will add up to $2,500 under §128 — that amount sits inside the same $5,000, not on top. Default investment during childhood: State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF (SPYM). Later menu: IVV, VTI, SPTM, ITOT.

Classroom rule. Match your own 401(k) first. College money still belongs in a 529. A working teenager’s retirement money still belongs in a custodial Roth. The Trump Account is the new third tool — and the only one that can arrive with a Treasury check. Keep your 401(k) match on first.

Path A — Verify an election you already filed

If you already filed Form 4547, stop. Do not file a second election for the same child. Use these four steps instead.

  1. 1
Check IRS Trump Accounts status — do not refile. Use your IRS Online Account and the hub at irs.gov/trumpaccounts (official site).
  2. 2
Watch for the Treasury email. Expect mail from no-reply@trumpaccounts.treasury.gov. Confirm any phone number on TrumpAccounts.gov before you call. Coverage has quoted 1-866-USA-4547 — verify that number on the official site first.
  3. 3
Activate in the official app only. Use trumpaccount.com or the official store listing — not a random third-party “helper” site asking for fees or logins.
  4. 4
Confirm seed and contributions are posting — then fund. After activation, check that the seed (if elected) and any family or employer deposits appear, then contribute inside the $5,000 yearly cap.

Scam / phishing box

  • Never pay a third party to “open” or “unlock” a Trump Account.
  • Never give your IRS Online Account or ID.me credentials to a helper site.
  • Activate only through trumpaccounts.gov, trumpaccount.com, or the official app store listing.
  • Treasury activation mail comes from no-reply@trumpaccounts.treasury.gov — not a look-alike domain.
  • Confirm the help line on TrumpAccounts.gov before dialing any number you saw in an email or ad.

Initial cash breakdown

Two different “free” deposits show up in the news. They use different birth-year windows. Confirm eligibility on official sites before you plan around either one.

Trump Account vs 529 vs UTMA vs custodial Roth

You can hold more than one. They are tools, not rivals. Classroom ranking for most families: claim the Trump Account seed if eligible, fund a 529 if college is the job, open a custodial Roth once a teenager has earned income, and use a UTMA only when you want flexible spending and accept the tax and financial-aid tradeoffs.

Do not — parent warnings

  • Do not say or believe “every American child gets $1,000.” Birth years and Form 4547 election matter.
  • Do not plan to “use the money right away for school or a house.” Withdrawals are generally blocked before 18.
  • Do not treat this as a 529 replacement. College money still belongs in a 529.
  • Do not treat “$13 million by 55” as a classroom promise. The compounding table is a ruler, not a forecast.
  • Do not use a covered-call ETF as the growth engine. Cheap U.S. index only during childhood.
  • Do not skip your 401(k) match to max the kids’ accounts first.

Common questions about Trump Accounts for kids

What is a Trump Account?

A traditional IRA for a child under IRC §530A. The child owns it. An adult is the responsible party until age 18. During childhood: no earned-income requirement, a $5,000 combined yearly cap, cheap U.S. index investments, and withdrawals generally blocked.

Who can open one?

A child under 18 at year-end of the election year, with a Social Security number already issued, and only one account per child.

Who files Form 4547?

In IRS order of priority: legal guardian, then parent, then adult sibling, then grandparent.

How do the $1,000 seed rules work?

For U.S. citizen children born January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028. You must elect it on Form 4547 (Part III). It is not automatic. The seed does not count against the $5,000 yearly cap.

What is the yearly contribution cap?

$5,000 combined from family, friends, the child, and employers for 2026–27. The cap is scheduled to be indexed after 2027. After-tax family contributions are not deductible.

How does employer money work?

Under §128, an employer may contribute up to $2,500 of that same $5,000. It is not extra room on top of the cap. Ask HR whether your workplace offers it.

What about the Dell $250?

Reported for children born 2016–2024 whose ZIP median household income is ≤ $150,000, through the Invest America partner. It is not a substitute for the federal $1,000 seed. Confirm current rules at investamerica.org (official site).

I already filed Form 4547. What now?

Do not file twice. Check IRS Trump Accounts status, wait for the Treasury email from no-reply@trumpaccounts.treasury.gov, activate in the official app only, then confirm seed and contributions are posting before you fund further. Jump to Path A.

Can we withdraw before age 18?

Generally no. Withdrawals are blocked during childhood except for limited cases such as rollovers, excess contributions, death, and certain ABLE transfers. Do not treat this like money you can spend for school or a house right away.

What happens after age 18?

The account becomes an ordinary traditional IRA. The child controls it. Earnings are taxed on withdrawal. A 10% additional tax usually applies before age 59½ unless an IRS exception fits. If you need the parent to keep the keys for education money, that is a 529 — not a Trump Account.
