Robinhood review · Series 01 · The On-Ramp. A straight review of the app, the sign-up reward people misquote, and the first two steps: create the brokerage account, then attach a bank. The advanced stuff is real. It is not today’s job. Figures checked September 23, 2026. Independent walkthrough. Not Robinhood. Not investment, tax, or legal advice.
If you open a new Robinhood account through our link, we may receive a referral reward once you’re approved and the account is funded. You do not pay extra. The stock you may get is a Robinhood promotion with published odds, a 60-day claim window, and holding rules. Investing can lose money, including all of it. Offers change. If the app disagrees with this page, believe the app.
The 30-second version
Robinhood is a U.S. brokerage you can open with no account minimum and use to buy stocks and ETFs commission-free. As of August 31, 2026, Robinhood reported 28.6 million funded customers and $384 billion in platform assets. It is no longer “the free-trade app.” It is a stack: brokerage, crypto, IRAs, a paid tier called Gold, a desktop platform, and banking products.
This article gets you through the front door only.
Use our link first. There is no promo code. If you already created a Robinhood login from the bare homepage, the new-customer stock is probably gone. One individual taxable brokerage account per person, ever, for that reward. If the words “brokerage” and “taxable account” are still new, walk Start Here first, then come back.
You’ll leave this site for Robinhood. U.S. residents, 18+. We may earn a reward if you fund a new account. Their terms win any argument with this paragraph.
What you’re actually signing up for
The 2018 version of this review was short. Tap, buy a slice of a famous stock, screenshot the confetti. That app is still in there. Around it, Robinhood now sells a much wider product, and the homepage is honest about the sprawl if you read past the button.
On day one you are opening a self-directed individual taxable brokerage at Robinhood Financial. That is the account that holds stocks and ETFs, and it is the account the sign-up stock is attached to. Crypto sits with Robinhood Crypto, a different entity. Retirement is a separate IRA you can add later. Gold is a subscription, not an account. Banking, the cash card, and the credit cards are later still, and the credit cards depend on approval.
A few things the basic account really does, as of this writing:
- Stocks and ETFs with $0 commissions and no account minimum. Fractional shares, so you are not waiting until you can afford a full share of an expensive company.
- Extended trading hours on eligible securities. Robinhood markets a 24/5 stock schedule. Not every ticker trades all night. The order ticket, not a billboard, tells you if that symbol is open.
- Options, futures, prediction-style event contracts, and crypto. Available, easy to tap, and a bad first afternoon. We cover them in later pieces. You can lose more than the “it’s only a few dollars” feeling the interface suggests.
- A retirement account with a contribution match: 1% on a self-directed IRA, or 3% if you pay for Gold. There is a five-year hold. More on that below, in one tight section, not a seminar.
- Robinhood Gold at $5 a month or $50 a year. The headline perk as of September 17, 2026 is 3.6% APY on eligible uninvested cash, if you turn the cash program on. The rate moves.
- Robinhood Legend, the desktop trading platform, plus managed portfolios (“Strategies”), joint and custodial accounts, and a trust account. None of these are required to get started.
What you will not find, and should not expect this series to unlock: a classic mutual-fund supermarket, or a human advisor assigned to your account. Strategies is a managed portfolio, which is a different product, with its own fee. Self-directed means you pick.
Who should open it, and who should wait
| Open it if… | Wait if… |
|---|---|
| You’re 18 or older, in the U.S., with a Social Security number and a residential U.S. address. | You only have an ITIN. Robinhood’s brokerage application wants an SSN. A visa can be enough for some non-citizens; the application, not this paragraph, decides. |
| You have a U.S. checking account in your name. Individual or joint is fine. Foreign banks are not. | Your money is in a prepaid card, a credit card, or an overseas account. Those won’t link. Don’t “try it and see” with a card you can’t afford to have blocked. |
| You want a simple taxable brokerage and you understand you can lose money. | You want someone to tell you what to buy. This article will not. Neither will the signup quiz. That quiz is a regulatory profile, not a prescription. |
| You have never had a Robinhood individual brokerage account. | You already had one, even if you closed it. The new-customer stock is for a first individual taxable brokerage account. Closing and reopening is not a reset. |
Louisiana residents can still open an individual account. They can’t be a co-owner of Robinhood’s joint account. Irrelevant today. Relevant the week you try to add a spouse.
What it costs on day one
Opening the account is $0. Leaving cash uninvested in a basic account is $0, and it also earns little or nothing worth planning a life around — we are not quoting a non-Gold rate because Robinhood’s Gold rate is the one they date in public, and the free rate isn’t the story.
The costs that surprise new people are not commissions:
- Gold is $5 a month, or $50 if you pay for the year. Don’t add it during signup just because the screen is shiny. Article 03 is the “is it worth it” piece. You can subscribe later from the same account.
- Options and futures can still have contract or regulatory fees even when the marketing says commission-free. The ticket shows the number before you submit. Read it.
- Instant withdrawals to a debit card can carry a fee. Standard ACH deposits should not. Any fee has to be on the review screen. If you don’t see a fee, don’t invent one; if you do, don’t tap through it.
- Spread and crypto fees are their own schedule. Out of scope here.
- The reward is taxable in a taxable account. Robinhood can report the value on a 1099. A $5 stock does not create a tax crisis. It also isn’t “free” in the way a grocery coupon is free. Set the expectation now.
The sign-up stock, with the odds people skip
Robinhood’s own new-customer offer — the one titled along the lines of “open an account, pick your stock” — pays a dollar amount you must spend on a share, or a fraction of a share, from a list of 26 big companies. Those 26 are the two largest S&P 500 names in each of 13 sectors, using market-cap data from August 29, 2025. You don’t get to nominate a meme stock.
The cash value is not a mystery range. Robinhood publishes the distribution:
| Published odds | Cash value |
|---|---|
| About 99% | receive $5 |
| About 0.9% | receive $10 |
| About 0.1% | receive $200 |
Source: Robinhood help, “Open account, pick your stock.” If those percentages change, this card changes the same day. “Up to $200” without this card is how you train readers not to trust the next article.
What you have to do to get it:
- Be a new customer. Never previously held a Robinhood individual taxable brokerage account.
- Apply and get approved.
- Link a bank account or a debit card.
- Claim the reward in the app within 60 days. Unclaimed rewards expire. Nobody emails you a courtesy extension.
What you cannot do with it immediately:
- Sell it for 3 trading days after it’s granted.
- Withdraw that cash value for 30 days after you claim it.
A deposit is not, in the current wording of that offer, the trigger for your stock. Linking is. Make the deposit anyway. An empty account can’t buy anything, a reversed transfer creates a restriction, and if you came through a referral, the referrer’s credit only exists after a deposit greater than $0 has settled. A failed ACH does not count. “I linked it” and “I funded it” are different sentences. Do both.
Click this before you download the app and type your email into a generic signup. The link has to be the front door.
How to open the account
Have these within reach: legal name, U.S. residential address, date of birth, phone, email, Social Security number, and a rough picture of your employment, income, and investing experience. If Robinhood can’t match you automatically, they’ll ask for a government ID and sometimes a proof of address. Start in a place where you can photograph a driver’s license without a glare.
Robinhood’s help center says to submit the individual application in the app, and that review takes 1–2 weeks. In practice a lot of people are approved the same day. Plan for the published window so a slow review doesn’t feel like a scam. You can queue a deposit before approval. They will not pull it until you’re approved. If you’re rejected, a queued deposit is canceled within 3 business days.
- Open our link, then the app. https://join.robinhood.com/randyl979 on your phone. Install Robinhood if it isn’t there. Continue in the flow that link started. Don’t switch to a different ad, a different blog, or the icon you already had on the home screen from an old download.
- Email and phone. Use an email you actually check. They will ask for a text code. Google Voice and freshly minted emails are a common reason reviews stall.
- Identity. Legal name, exactly as it appears on your ID. Address. Date of birth. Citizenship or residency. SSN. This is a brokerage application under U.S. identity rules, not a credit-card application. Don’t round your name to a nickname to “make it match your email.”
- The financial questions. Job, income, net worth, investing experience, and whether you understand you can lose money. Answer for real. Inflating experience to unlock options on day one is how people end up in a product this series hasn’t earned the right to explain yet.
- Agreements. You’ll accept a customer agreement, tax certification, and privacy terms. Skim the headings. You’re opening a brokerage, not a social app.
- Submit, then watch email. Approval, or a request for documents, arrives by email. If they want a document, upload it inside the secure flow they send. Don’t email a photo of your license to a friend “to hold.” While you wait, you can queue the deposit in step 8. You cannot honestly claim the stock until the account exists and the bank is linked.
The account type on this path is the individual investing account. Joint, IRA, custodial, and trust accounts are add-ons, and several of them require this individual account to exist first and be in good standing. Don’t try to open four things in the first hour.
Add a funding source
Do this as soon as you’re in, including while a slow application is still pending if the app lets you link. The stock reward is tied to the link. Use a U.S. checking account in your name. Savings accounts can work and then bounce a transfer because of the bank’s withdrawal limits. Robinhood has said it prefers checking for that reason. Credit cards and prepaid cards are not accepted. A Visa or Mastercard debit card can be linked for faster transfers; it is a convenience, not a substitute for having a real bank on the account.
In the app:
- Tap Account (the person icon).
- Tap the menu (three bars).
- Tap Transfers → Linked accounts → Add account.
- If your bank is on the list, continue through Plaid, sign in at the bank, and pick the checking account. That’s the instant path. Robinhood never needs your bank password stored in a note on your phone; the bank’s own screen is the login.
- If your bank isn’t listed, add it manually: routing number and account number. Robinhood sends two small deposits, usually within 1–3 business days. Come back and confirm the amounts. Until you do, you don’t have a funding source, you have a pending one.
- Optional: add a debit card under the same Add account path. Not prepaid. Not a credit card. Useful when you want money to land in about 30 minutes instead of several days.
On the website the same tools live under Account → Transfers. Names move around when the app updates. If a label isn’t where this says, use the search in Help inside the app for “link your accounts” rather than tapping random balance numbers.
Two limits worth knowing before you “just add every bank”:
- Robinhood caps how many external accounts you can attach. The cap is shown when you add one. You need one good checking account, not a scavenger hunt.
- The name on the bank account has to be you. Business accounts, trusts, and someone else’s account are a good way to get the link rejected or the account restricted.
Make the first deposit
Pick an amount you can leave alone for a couple of weeks. The point of the first deposit is to finish setup and, if you care about the referral being valid, to let a transfer settle. It is not to put rent money somewhere you might need Thursday.
- Account → menu → Transfers → Deposit.
- Enter the amount. Continue. Choose the bank as From and the individual investing account as To.
- Frequency: Just once, unless you already know you want a weekly or monthly transfer. Recurring is available later (weekly, twice a month, monthly, quarterly). Skip it today.
- Review. If a fee is listed, stop and read it. Then confirm.
- If the app offers Start instant transfer, that’s the faster rail for eligible banks. You must accept the prompt from your bank within about 30 minutes or the request dies. Robinhood doesn’t charge a fee on that deposit type. Not every bank is eligible.
| How you send it | Typical timing | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Standard ACH from the linked bank | Up to 5 business days to fully settle. A portion may be tradable sooner. | This is the normal first deposit. |
| Instant Deposits | A slice of a pending ACH can be tradable immediately, up to a limit. | You want to buy before the bank transfer finishes. You still cannot treat that slice as withdrawable cash. |
| Debit card | Often about 30 minutes. Sometimes longer. Your bank can decline it. | You’re funding a small amount and you’d rather not wait out an ACH. |
| Instant bank transfer | Minutes, after you approve it at your bank. No Robinhood fee. 30-minute accept window. | Your bank is on the eligible list and you see the button. |
| Wire | Same day or next business day, depending on when your bank sends it. | Later. Not the first-timer path. Get the instructions from Transfers so you don’t wire a typo. |
Instant Deposits, so the number isn’t a rumor. Instant Deposits let you trade with part of a pending deposit. They are not a withdrawal, and they are not guaranteed. Robinhood’s published ceilings:
- No Gold. Portfolio under $1,000: up to $1,000. Portfolio above $1,000: up to $1,000, or 2× your portfolio rounded down to the nearest thousand, whichever is greater.
- Gold. Portfolio under $2,000: up to $5,000. Above that: up to $5,000, or 3× portfolio on the same rounding, whichever is greater.
- IRAs: up to $1,000, Gold or not.
Anything above your instant limit waits out the normal transfer, up to 5 business days. Open overnight trades, a recent reversal, or a fresh account can knock the feature off entirely. The app’s transfer-limits screen beats any number in an article, including this one.
After you send it, look at Account → History. You want two different states, and new users mix them up:
- Pending / instant buying power. You may be able to buy. You should not withdraw. If the ACH bounces, Robinhood will reverse the deposit and can restrict the account. Don’t spend instant funds on a withdrawal-shaped idea.
- Settled. This is the state that counts as funding. Give a normal ACH several business days. Don’t cancel it, don’t pull the money back from your bank app, and don’t file a dispute because you got impatient.
Then go claim the stock if the reward card is sitting on the home screen. Sixty days sounds long. It isn’t, if you meant to “do it this weekend” in March.
The other rewards worth knowing before you wander off
These are real, current, and easy to misunderstand. None of them are a reason to complicate day one.
Gold, in one paragraph
Robinhood Gold is $5 a month or $50 a year. As of September 17, 2026, Gold members enrolled in the High-Yield Cash program earn a 3.6% APY on eligible uninvested brokerage cash. That rate can change. Robinhood is not a bank; interest, when it’s the sweep program, is paid through program banks. Gold also raises instant-deposit ceilings, makes the first $1,000 of margin borrowing interest-free, cuts some index-option and futures costs, and lifts the self-directed IRA contribution match from 1% to 3%. Managed portfolios only charge their management fee on the first $100,000 if you’re a Gold member. You do not need any of that to buy your first share. Turn Gold on when you can point at the perk you’re paying for.
The IRA match, in one paragraph
On a self-directed Robinhood IRA, annual contributions match at 1%, or 3% with Gold. Using the limits Robinhood lists for 2026: $7,500 if you’re under 50, which is $75 or $225 of match; $8,600 if you’re 50 or over, which is $86 or $258. The match itself doesn’t count against the IRS contribution cap. Transfers and old 401(k) rollovers match at 1% with or without Gold, and Robinhood describes that match as uncapped — their example is $1,000 on a $100,000 move. IRAs managed by Robinhood Strategies don’t get the contribution match. You have to keep the assets that earned a match in the IRA for 5 years, and if you took the Gold rate you have to keep Gold for at least a year from the first Gold match or the extra 2% can be taken back. This is the entire reason article 04 exists. Don’t open an IRA in the same sitting as your first login unless you already wanted one.
If you later send friends
You don’t need this to finish setup. It’s here so nobody confuses it with the stock you just claimed. Since September 1, 2026, referring friends pays the referrer only at milestones: $50 at 1 funded referral, $150 at 3, $800 at 10, $4,000 at 50, and $10,000 at 200, up to $15,000 a year. Friends in between those counts pay nothing. The friend must be a new U.S. customer, get approved, link a bank, and have a deposit settle. Both sides are US residents. Rewards are stock from that same big-company list, not cash in your pocket, and they expire if you don’t claim them within 60 days. The referrer waits 60 days to withdraw the cash value, not 30. Different offer, different clock.
Only if you see it in your signup. Some Robinhood promotional links add a cash bonus based on how much you deposit in the first 7 days, on top of the stock. Tiers on that offer have started at $25 once net deposits hit $1,000 and climbed from there. It is not on every link, including possibly ours. If your flow never shows the offer, you don’t have it. Don’t increase your first deposit to chase a tier that isn’t written down inside your own application.
Robinhood also runs seasonal pushes — the site was in the middle of a “HOOD month” campaign when this was written. Banners rotate. Read the banner’s terms. An article can’t keep up with a button that changes on a Thursday.
The advanced map, so you know it exists
You will see these in the product menu. Seeing them is not a suggestion. If you still want the bigger beginner path before you tap Buy, read How to start investing (2026) alongside this series.
| You’ll notice | What it is | When we cover it |
|---|---|---|
| Buy / sell a stock or fraction | The actual point of the account | Article 02 |
| Gold | $5 subscription: cash yield, higher instant deposits, 3% IRA match, some fee cuts | Article 03 |
| Retirement | Traditional and Roth IRA, plus the match and its hold rules | Article 04 |
| Transfer accounts, wires, direct deposit | Moving serious money, not the first $50 | Article 05 |
| Crypto, staking, wallet, Earn | A separate product. Yield features are state-by-state. New York has blocked at least one of them. | Article 06 |
| Options, futures, Legend, prediction markets | Leverage, contracts, and a desktop terminal. Easy to open, easy to misunderstand. | Article 07 |
| Banking, cash card, Gold card, Platinum card | Spending and credit. Credit is an application, not a perk you toggle. | Article 08 |
Three mistakes that kill the bonus
- You create the account before you use the link. The reward is attached at the door. There is no field labeled “promo code” where we can fix it afterward. If the account already exists, this page can’t help you, and you should not open a second identity to try again. That gets people banned, not paid.
- You link nothing. Approval alone doesn’t pay the stock. A bank or a debit card has to be linked, and you have to claim within 60 days. Set a reminder the day you’re approved.
- You treat a pending deposit like finished money. Buying with instant funds and then letting the ACH bounce is the fastest way to a restricted account. Withdrawing the reward cash on day two fails for a more boring reason: the 30-day rule. Leave the first deposit alone until History shows it settled.
First-week checklist
- ☐ Opened https://join.robinhood.com/randyl979 before creating any Robinhood login.
- ☐ Submitted the individual brokerage application under your legal name.
- ☐ Uploaded any document they asked for. Checked the email that isn’t your promotions folder.
- ☐ Linked a U.S. checking account. Finished micro-deposit confirmation if the bank wasn’t on Plaid.
- ☐ Sent one deposit you can live without. Did not cancel it.
- ☐ Claimed the stock reward. Noted the day. Did not plan to sell it before three trading days, or withdraw that cash before 30 days.
- ☐ Turned on two-factor authentication. Robinhood requires a multi-factor option; use an authenticator app if they offer it, not just SMS.
- ☐ Did not turn on margin, options, or Gold just because the screen offered.
- ☐ Wrote down nothing that looks like a password or a full account number in a screenshot you’re about to post.
Short answers
Is there a Robinhood promo code?
No. Not for this offer. The referral link is the mechanism. Anyone selling a “code” in a comment is guessing, or worse.
How long until I can buy something?
The form is about 10–15 minutes if your documents are handy. Approval is often faster than the 1–2 weeks Robinhood prints, and sometimes it isn’t. Instant Deposits, if you’re eligible, can let you trade before an ACH settles. Withdrawing is a slower right than buying.
Is the free stock really up to $200?
The top prize is $200. About 99% of people get $5, about 0.9% get $10, and about 0.1% get $200. It’s a promotional share from a list of large companies, it’s taxable, and you can’t sell it for three trading days.
Which bank should I link?
A U.S. checking account in your name, preferably one that shows up in Plaid so you aren’t waiting on micro-deposits. Not a credit card. Not a prepaid card. Not a bank outside the United States.
Is the cash insured? Are the stocks?
Stocks and ETFs at a brokerage are not FDIC-insured, and they can go to zero. SIPC protection, which applies to Robinhood Financial as a member broker-dealer, covers missing assets if the broker fails, up to the standard SIPC limits. It does not cover a bad trade. Cash in a bank-sweep program can be FDIC-insured through the program banks, up to whatever those banks and Robinhood currently disclose. Read that disclosure inside the app before you park a large cash balance. Neither program protects market losses.
I already have an account. Now what?
The new-customer stock won’t apply. You can still use the funding steps above if you never linked a bank. The rest of this series — first trade, Gold, IRA — is the part written for you.
